Citation Oil & Gas to pay $2.25M in royalties case

DENVER — A federal prosecutor says Texas-based Citation Oil & Gas Corp. will pay $2.25 million to settle allegations it underpaid royalties for natural gas produced on federal land in Wyoming.

Colorado U.S. Attorney Bob Troyer said Tuesday that Citation was accused of breaking federal law requiring companies to make royalty payments for natural gas produced on leased federal lands. It was accused of deducting the cost of making natural gas into a marketable product from its royalties, which isn't permitted.

Citation officials didn't immediately respond to a voicemail left Tuesday at the company's Houston headquarters.

Troyer called the settlement "a message to the entire gas industry" that the companies will be held accountable for making full royalty payments.
